London In Stereo – In Five (interview)

CHALK // IN FIVE

Chalk

With the release of his new album How To Become a Recluse (Listen on GoldFlakePaint now) Chalk has brought his sensitive and intensely personal music to a stunning new level. The lo-fi gloominess of the tracks make them perfect to dive into, to lose yourself in and soak up. But we’ll let Steven Stride himself do the talking, here he describes to us the music that has influenced him and how it’s shaped the music he makes today:

Cursive – What Have I done?

This song is most of my biggest fears. I have done a lot of waiting around for something to happen, waiting for me to sort myself out, waiting for me to write a record that didn’t want to destroy straight after finishing. The lyrics in the song made such a big impact on me, that the first band I was in when I moved to Brighton (Crooked Mountain, Crooked Sea) named two of our releases after lines in this song “I Watched It From The Roadside” and “What’s There To Write About?”.

“I spent the best years of my life waiting on the best years of my life now what’s there to write about?”

Brand New – Limousine

The album this song is taken from I absolutely hated on my first listen. I bought the new Brand New record wanting to hear Brand New, some catchy pop songs with some beautifully written lyrics about girls giving them trouble. so when i bought this, I listened to it once and was not impressed. 6 months later I became a recluse, didn’t leave the house for a very very long time and this song came on random on my iTunes and it all started to make sense. I put the rest of the album on and then clicked repeat.

“In the choir I saw a sad messiah, He was bored and tired of my laments, Said, “I died for you one time but never again”

Elliott Smith (or Heatmiser) – Half right

Elliott Smith has always been my go to guy for everything musical. I never try to imitate him but when I’m running dry on inspiration I Listen to him and remember what quality I want to achieve (haven’t nailed that yet). Elliott Smith’s version of his own bands song (heatmiser) is my pick though. Heart-breaking vocals and wavering guitar lines makes for a beautifully sad song.

“With a broken sink for a face and a head that just takes up space, He’s not half right”

Vincent Vocoder Voice – You’re Lying to Yourself (Barthes’ Fade Out)

He is my closest friend and this song made me hate him. It was one of those moments where I just thought I should stop making music. He is doing it how it is supposed to be done, He may never get big and he might not ever make any money of it (who does?) but I think he has made a dent in music history. Even if no one but me hears it.

“It’s dawn and all our friends have left. I’m listening to your wheezing chest. You’re fond of saying you ain’t with me for your health and I love you to pieces but you’re lying to yourself.”

The Paper Chase – Now, We Just Slowly Circle the Draining Fish Bowl

The Paper Chase are one of my all-time favourite bands and I would go as far to John Congleton is one of the greatest lyricists of all time but i still wasn’t ready for this song. The first time I heard this it got to the last few lines in the song and It broke me down, had a little tear and then put it back on, possibly another 5 or 6 times. It’s about a person coming back from the war to their shattered and lonely life.

“This was something we choose to believe, not me! As I kick and claw home in a box. Find a place, job to claim, eat my heart. Hope i choke, hope I stroke, catch the flu. In your arm, your chair, your family heirlooms. Wife resents kids that fuck in your room, when we laugh we’ll be laughing at you. When you circle your draining fish bowl, sell your house, sell your car, sell your soul, spend your whole life just praying to spend your life.”
